Grooming FAQs
-
How long have you been grooming dogs? What kind of training do you have?
I am self taught from visiting dog shows and watching the show dogs get groomed. I have been grooming dogs for over 40 years.
-
Do you have experience with my dog’s breed?
Some breeds have particular grooming needs. We have experience grooming an assortment of breeds from Retrievers, to Porties, to Poodles and Doodles to mixed breeds and all in between.
-
Do you groom cats as well?
We currently do not groom cats.
-
May I see your facility?
Of course, our facilities are open to our clients and you are welcome to visit prior to booking. Please just make an appointment so I can be sure to be there to show you around. You can also stay with your pet during the grooming service if you would like. Your pet is also welcome to stay for the day on us if you need to run errands, etc.
-
What grooming services do you provide?
We have the proper tools and knowledge for removing mats, trimming nails, and cleaning ears. We wash, cut, blow dry and brush your pet as needed. We will also shave your pet if needed or requested. We will make you aware if we detect any signs of ear infections, tooth decay, and skin infections.
-
May I stay and watch while you groom my dog?
Of course you can stay and we encourage it, if it will help your pet stay relaxed. However, your own nerves can make some pets more anxious, but it’s not unreasonable to want to observe, at least the first time. It’s also a good opportunity to see your dog’s behaviour for future visits. We are happy to accommodate your wishes.
-
Do you have a grooming guide for Portuguese Water Dogs?
Yes we do and you can view and download it here.
-
How will my dog be housed?
Pets not being groomed will be kept in a crate or secure designated play area (with owner’s consent). Your pet will have a crate to themselves, with clean padding, plenty of air, and in view of salon personnel.
-
How much will my dog’s grooming cost?
See our current pricing here.
Boarding FAQs
-
Will my dog be happy in a boarding kennel?
Many dogs are happy to stay in kennels and even look forward to visiting. Plan well in advance and make sure to visit us beforehand to verify that that our facility meets your expectations. We give the option for your dog to socialize with other dogs if you wish. If you wish to keep your dog separated from other dogs we offer that option as well.
Our Kennels are spacious, clean and comfortable.
If you have multiple dogs that get along well, there are appropriately sized kennels so that they can be housed together. We also offer a discount for each additional same household dog. See pricing for more.
-
How do I know if my dog will relax in the kennel?
Despite the fears of their owners, most dogs settle into boarding life quickly. It is always worthwhile to board your pet for a short period, such as a weekend or a few days, to see how they do before you leave for a prolonged time. One or two short stays at a kennel will help your pet adjust to being without you and get used to the boarding facility and staff.
Many dogs that are unaccustomed to boarding will have a decreased appetite or drink less water during their stay. This is normal for the first few visits, but frequent, short visits will help reduce your pet's anxieties.
-
Are there any health requirements for boarding my pet?
All pets that are boarded should be in good health and up-to-date on their vaccinations and parasite prevention. Rabies, canine distemper, parvovirus, and Bordetella ("kennel cough") vaccines are universally required. We require written proof of vaccination from a licensed veterinarian and all applicable pet licenses prior to boarding your pet. We welcome holistically raised dogs as well.
You should discuss any special medical problems or dietary requirements with us before boarding your pet. If your pet requires medication, ensure we are willing and able to administer it as scheduled. Ensure that you leave us written authorization for emergency veterinary care, along with the contact information for your veterinarian and someone who can make decisions if you can’t be reached. Be sure to contact us and find out what else might be required prior to your visit to avoid last-minute delays.

Puppy FAQs
-
How long have you been breeding dogs?
Jane has been breeding quality pure bred Porties and Goldens for over 20 years.
-
What breeds do you offer?
We breed Portuguese Water Dogs and Golden Retrievers.
-
Will the puppies be registered?
In Canada, all purebred dogs come with a Purebred Dog Certificate of Registration issued by The Canadian Kennel Club – without this certificate, they can’t legally be sold as purebred.
The certificate indicates, among other things, the dog’s registered name, breed and date of birth, as well as the names of the dog’s sire and dam.
We are responsible for registering the puppy to us and then once the puppy is spayed or neutered, transfer of ownership will be completed and provided to the new owner.
-
Can I see the sire's and dam’s health clearances?
We can provide all of this if requested. We would never think of breeding a dog that hasn’t passed the recommended health clearances.
-
Can I see where the puppies are being housed?
Yes of course, just ask and we will give you a tour when you arrive for your scheduled appointment. That being said, we cannot permit access to the pups and their mother until they start weaning. This is to ensure mother and puppy bonding and private time.
The best way to raise puppies is in a home environment where they receive lots of handling and human contact. No amount of love and attention from you can ever make up for a lack of early socialization.
-
Is the dam current on her vaccines?
We take vaccines very seriously. Puppies receive their initial immunity directly from their mother. If her vaccines are not up to date, the puppies’ ability to resist disease will be compromised.
-
At what age will the puppies be ready to go home?
Puppies should go to their new homes between eight and ten weeks of age. This is the optimum time for a puppy to transition from their litter to their new family – any earlier and they may have issues with other dogs in the future; any longer with their littermates and they may not bond as well with people.
Your puppy should be limited to public exposure to public through fares like large off leash parks for example.
-
Will the puppies be seen by a vet before they leave?
Puppies are examined, dewormed and vaccinated prior to leaving us. We ask that you ensure to schedule all required follow ups with your own veterinarian, as puppies that don’t receive boosters at appropriate intervals are at risk of contracting life-threatening illnesses.
-
What kind of guarantee do you offer?
Breeding is not an exact science, and problems can surface in the best of lines. We offer a health guarantee on our puppies— see contract.
-
is there a health certificate provided with each puppy.
Yes, we provide a health certificate for each and every puppy as this is the law here in Nova Scotia.
We are open to a holistic approach provided a titer test is done on a yearly wellness check.
